British Ships Run Blockade
HONGKONG, Mon. UI.3U a.m.).— Two British ships arrived at Hongkong today after successfully running the Nationalist blockade at Shanghai and Tientsin respectively. One was the 800-tonner Edith Moller, which .s the first ship to enter Shanghai and safely leave since the blockade was imposed. European officers declined to say how they evaded the blockade except that they entered port under cover of darkness. They added that shots were fired across the bow when approaching Woosung at the mouth of the Whangpoo. leading to Shanghai. The Communists made Captain R. Hall promise not to embark any ‘illegal passengers,’ and dozens of Communist officials daily visited the ship to see that the promise was carried out. The second blockade-breaking ship was the fieighter Lady Wolmar. which arrived from Tientsin.
Officers said when they left the ship and returned they were closely searched by soldiers who had been so indoctrinated with hatred of Europeans that they treated them contemptuously.
