Three Whangarei Men s Hockey Games Drawn

THREE draws in the men’s A grade were the features of Whangarei hockey at Kensington Park on Saturday. The main match between Mangapai and Old Boys A resulted in a two—all draw. Rovers’ draw with Springfield was the surprise of the day. Maungakaramea and High School A provided the third draw. The ladies’ A grade leaders, Maungakaramea, had a comfortable s—l win over Kara.

By drawing with Old Boys. Mangapai maintained its unbeaten record. It has had two draws this season. It was one of the most keenly contested and willing games seen at the park this year. Mangapai was first to score. M. Carter netting with a perfect angle shot. Neither team had a weak link and the forwards found it difficult to penetrate. After several desperate plunges, Old Boys equalised through R. Mullins. This livened up the game considerably. Several quick passing rushes met sound defence. OVER GOALIE’S HEAD A high shot in to the corner of Ihe net pul Mangapai in the lead at halftime. The forwards had taken play into the Old Boys circle and the halves came up to assist. The ball came back to R. Cavaye. who put it over the goalie’s head. The equalising goal came from a corner rather late in the game. Although the shot was charged down, the ball ricocheted off a defending stick into the net. PRICE CLEARS Old Boys were awarded a penalty bully, which was taken by L. Price and R. Roughton and cleared by Price . Best Old Boys players were Roughton (forward). C. Hughes (half), L. Bull and H. Oidcorn (backs), and J. McPherson, (goal). M. Carter, .^R.

Steedman, L. Cotton (forwards). R. Price, R. Cavaye (halves), L. Price and H. Lornie (backs) were the pick of the Mangapai team. After leading 3—o, Springfield appeared to take Rovers A too cheaply and finished up drawing, 4-all. Last week Rovers beats Ramblers, and now share fourth place on the ladder. High School A led Maungakaramea 4 —3 and appeared certain to repeat its first-round performance. However, C. Bint, who scored three of Karamea’s goals, rushed in to the net almost on time to avert defeat.
