Stole Shirt While Under Infuence
Charged with the theft of a shirt valued at 23/3 the property of Alexander Rowan Murdoch Carter, of Kamo, Robert Harris, trucker in the Kamo State Mine appeared before Mr W. C. Harley, S.M., at the Whangarei Court today. Harris pleaded guilty, sayirg he must have stolen the shirt while under the influence of alcohol. Senior-Sergeant J. Sutherland said defendant had a formidable list of offences and had taken out a prohibition order against himself. Harris had first denied the offence, but, on the day following an interview, came to the Whangarei Police Station and admitted taking the shirt from Carter. Harris earned from £l2 to £ls per week in the mine. He said he would not offend again. “It will be the first time you haven’t offended again,” said Mr Harley. Harris was fined £5 and 10/- costs and admitted to probation for two years.
The Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) unveiled a Maori war memorial at the Horohoro school, near Whakarewarewa, before 800 people on Saturday. The memorial consists of a carved bell tower and gateway, with a plaque bearing the names of 71 men from the district who served in the two World Wars.
