Roskill Seat 96 But Still

Still able to walk to the Presbyterian Church from her residence in Donald Street, Mrs Norman McKenzie celebrates her 96th birthday today. Yesterday she walked nearly a mile to church and was extended congratulations and best wishes by the Rev. T. H. Burton. Mrs McKenzie is the oldest member of the congregation. On Friday she was out doing her shopping, and still works in her garden. Many friends were fearly to wish her “happy birthday” today and her house has been full of well-wishers. FROM NOVA SCOTIA Mrs McKenzie was seven years old when she participated in the famous migration of the Highlanders of Waipu from Nova Scotia. After a week ,in Auckland, her family came North in a trading cutter and walked to Kauri, where her grandfather established his residence. Mrs McKenzie spent her childhood and young womanhood in Kauri, where she married the late Mr Norman McKenzie. Mr McKenzie farmed in the district until about 35 years ago, when he retired to Donald Street. A foundation member of the Whangarei branch of the Presbyterian Women’s Missionary Union, Mrs McKenzie will be honoured by the union later in the year, when a special afternoon will be held for several old members.
