Work Continues On Portland Collier
Whangarei watersiders continued to discharge'the Union Company’s collier Kiwitea at Portland this morning She carries 1300 tons of Westport coa' for the Portland Cement Works. On Saturday the watersiders uiv loaded slightly over 100 tons of coal, four rakes of trucks being filled at the ship’s side. The cement works is now operating at half capacity, owing to the coal shortage, and two kilns will be kept running for a few days when it may become possible to start up a third kiln.
At the present rate, if no delays occur through wet weather, it is anticipated that the Kiwitea will be completely discharged on Wednesday. It may be possible for the watersiders to finish at Portland at noon on Wednesday. They could then be ready to start work at Port Whangarei after lunch, when the Northern Company’) new vessel Vestria will probably b berthed. She is due here with 500 tons o North African phosphate.
