Maromaku School Wins 3 Basketball Titles

GIRLS of the Maromaku School recorded the outstanding performance at the Whangarei Primary Schools Sports Association’s annual winter tournament yesterday of winning the three basketball’ titles. The senior, junior and bantam teams played splendidly and thoroughly deserved their success. Country teams figured in the three finals.

Tlie Convent boys wcei the three open football competitions. The championships went to Hikurangi (senior), Kamo (junior) and Kamo (bantams). Only three teams entered in the senior and junior and tow in the bantams. In the senior final, Hikurangi beat Portland B—s8 —5 and in the junior final Kamo beat Hikurangi 3 nil. Kamo won the bantam final early in the day. TLIiASING SPORTSMANSHIP The football was marked by frequent displays of pleasing sportsmanship. In this respect too, it was obvious that the teachers had been putting in much good work. Despite the numbers taking part, both basketball and football tournaments were well-organised.

The championships were decided among country teams which had won their zone competitions, while unsuccessful country teams and sevens from the town schools competed m the open competitions. In conformity with the rules, schools entering more than one team in a grade distributed their strength. This made for close games, with extra time required at times to bring a decision. Concluding results were: Basketball CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS SENlOß—Maromaku 8, Ngararatimun 4. JUNlOß—Maromaku 13, Portland 1. BANTAM—Maromaku 0, Kamo 5.
