Church Denial Of Sandwich Boards

AUCKLAND, Sat. (P.A.)—Sandwich board statements in Queen Street last evening that “The Council of Churches Opposes Conscription” were denied today by the chairman of the Auckland branch of the National Council of Churches (the Rev. J. D. Smith).

He quoted a statement issued by the New Zealand Inter-Church Courreil on Public Affairs on July 19, appreciating the Government’s action in permitting both viewpoints to be expressed over the air, and applauding the decision not to allow wet canteens in camps.

No statement had been made for or against conscription.

Policemen approached men carrying sandwich boards, but it is not known whether action is contemplated. A City Council official said today that he understood permission had not been granted for the men to display signs.
