Fine For Overcharge

AUCKLAND, Sat. (Sp.)—A fine of £2 was imposed on William Henry Watson, taxi-driver, by Mr J. H. Luxford, S.M., yesterday for overcharging for a trip from Western Springs to Mt Albert, a distance of 14-10 miles. The maximum charge which could be supported was 2/-, while the passenger, Constable Weber, was charged 3/-.

Watson said he had checked the charge on the speedometer as the taxi meter was not working, making the distance 1 6-10 miles. The magistrate said there was no doubt an overcharge had been made, but he emphasised the need to inform a driver if a complaint was being made as it was impossible for a driver to remember all his runs on any one day.
