Higher Bus Fares Or teased Rates?
WELLINGTON, Thu. (P.A.) . Throughout the Dominion the number of people travelling on tramcars and buses was falling, and the Transport Charges Committee would sooner or later be asked whether fares were to be increased to carry the extra burden, or whether the, whole of the people would have to assist, said the Ministei of Transport (Mr Hackett), in the House of Representatives last night.
He was replying to the second reading debate on the Transport Licensing Amendment Bill, under which tram fares are to be fixed by the committee instead of by the Price Tribunal. “If- we are- to charge fares, commensurate with the outgoings of the railways, they will have ■to go up 20, 30 or 40 per cent,” said- Mr Hackett.
Mr Hackett asked why poor persons compelled to travel by train should have to pay for the enormous outgoings of the railways when other people could afford to travel by road in a luxury bus or in their own car. Would the railways have to. be discarded or would they have to be retained?
He believed they would be retained, as there was no better means for heavy haulages.
The bi|l was put through all stages and passed.
