Confined To Main Ports ?

Overtime Ban

WELLINGTON, Wed. (P.A.)— The ban on waterfront overtime is expected to be confined to the main ports and probably will not extend to smaller ports. The reason for this, it was stated in Wellington today, is that because even with the loss of overtime earnings, watersiders at the big ports, such as Wellington, will still have between £7 and £8 pay a week. At smaller ports, with less work offering, wages would drop far below this if the ban was extended to those places.

So far, Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton and Bluff, which is considered a major port, have complied with the directive of the national council and imposed a ban. The question will be considered at a stop-work meeting in Dunedin tomorrow.

Port Chalmers watersiders held a slop-work meeting this morning to consider the overtime ban, but although the meeting lasted nearly three hours, no decision was reached.

The men were addressed by the president of the Port Chalmers branch (Mr Neil Crichton) and the national vice-president (Mr Alex Drennan).
