A portable paint-spraying outfit operating in Bank Street, Whangarei, yesterday, attracted considerable attention from shoppers. Outlines of car-parking areas and the informative lettering thereon received freshening applications of yellow paint
from the machine. Its operator must have felt something in the nature of a London pavement aUist as he worked before the interested gaze of pass-ers-by. TURNOVER. A considerable turnover of population in the central area of Whang.arc i it- indicated by the enrolment figures of the Whangarei Public .School which were incorporated in the

TRIBUTES Speakers at the Northland Bowling Centre’s annual meeting paid tribute to the excellent work Mr B. G. Smith had done for Northland bowls during his term as president last season. It was pointed out that Mr Smith had visited every club in the centre. Mr Smith was typically modest in his reply. “I was only a figurehead. It is -the team that gets the work done,” he said. The outstanding work is done by the secretary (Mr E. J. Dingle) and the representative on the New Zealand Bowling Council (Mr J. H. Ma"wick) was also praised.
SAWDUST Sawdust bowling greens were still in the experimental stage, said Mr J. H. Marwick at the annual meeting of tlie Northland Bowling Centre. The NZBC had granted affiliation to two southern clubs in sawdust greens but Mr Marwick pointed out that only clubs away from the main centres would be granted the privilege. Northland and Manawatu centres had been congratulated at the NZBC annual meeting for having the highest proportionate increase in membership during last season, said Mr Marwick. Had the' figures for two registered clubs been available, Northland would have easilv taken the honours. This will be used by district high school cadets for live firing practice with 22 bore rifles. The range is being constructed for the Army Department on a previously unused portion of the school grounds in a position which offers no danger (o either pupils or the public.
