Car Drivers And School Crossing

Some concern is being felt by the Whangarei Primary School authorities regarding the dangerous manner in which some motorists approach the pedestrian crossing over Bank Street outside the school, said the headmaster (Mr D. Taylor) yesterday.

“Since the beginning of July the licence numbers of eight motorists who are alleged to have driven over the crossing in a dangerous manner have been taken by boys of the school patrol, teachers and others,” said Mr Taylor.

“Most motorists are considerate, and I do not want to condemn all drivers.

“My sole concern is for the safety of the schoolchildren. "Motorists should remember that, when a school patrol puts its signs out across a pedestrian crossing, then that crossing becomes different from an ordinary pedestrian crossing. "The motorist must stop, even if his or her half of the crossing is clear." ■ Mr Taylor pointed out that all traffic passing through Whangarei used the two chains of road on which the crossing was situated. The only way in which it could be by-passed was to use Ormond Road — the stock route running along the loot of the Western Hills.
