Seal On 90 Mile Beach
KAITAIA, Tue. (Sp.).—-Making its way above high-water mark to the sand dunes, a young seal was an unusual ' visitor to 90 Mile Beach at Hukatere, about 10 miles north of Waipapakauri access road, in Saturday afternoon. About 3ft long and with a rich irown fur pelt, the seal was seen jy Mr and Mrs J. T. B. Taaffe, o» Caitaia, while driving on lh< 'each.
It had not long left the wale jnd was evidently making it ivay to the sand-hills to "bask i he warmth of the bright sunshint When Mr Taaffe approached fo a closer inspection the seal mad off with remarkable speed dowi to the beach and quickly regaine. the surf, disappearing almost im mediately. Mr Taace noted that the anima bore a slight injury on oni shoulder, but did not considet this was sufficient to force i; ashore.
Seals are rarely seen in Fa. North waters and the last recorded visitor of this species to 90 MileBeach was more than two years ago.
