Whangarei Beats Combined Team
Badminton
By 22 games to 16, Whangarei beat a combined team from the Opua and Puketona clubs in a badminton match played at Whangarei on Saturday night. Fifty-six players took part. A pleasing feature, as tar as the local club was .concerned, was the manner in which a number of firstyear players acquitted themselves in their first match. They performed well indeed against more experienced opponents. G. Rattray, a first-year player, who did so' well against an Auckland team in the previous week-end, played with D. Purser in the top men’s doubles against the Perrett brothers, of Opua. He again showed fine form and combined well with Purser for a 15 —10 win.
In the top ladies’ doubles, the Whangarei pair, Miss Griffin and Miss Gilbert; went down 14—15 _to Mrs Nerheny and Miss Morris. It. was perhaps a disappointing game. with'.the Whangarei combination losing many opportunities. REMARKABLE PROGRESS In the second ladies’ doubles, Mesdames Elliot and Nesbit scored a meritorious win for Whangarei. Mrs Elliot is a first-year player who has made remarkable progress. She went well with a much-improved Mrs Nesbit to win 15—8. Purser and Miss Griffin won the top combines for Whangarei, 15—10, against C. Perrett and Mrs Nerheny.
