Spivs Try lo Crash Queue For Alleged Murder Trial
LONDON, Sun. (noon).—Police were .sent to the County Hall, Lewes, Sussex, tonight to disperse gangs of London spivs who tried to < ‘crash the (jueue of {ill-night sitters waiting for the trial of John Haig, which begins tomorrow. Late this afternoon spivs drove up in a lorry and told reporters they were charging £5 each to wait through the night until the court doors opened.
A police sergeant warned them that if “fresh faces'' appeared in their places when the court opened they would be refused admission. Hearing this, the spivs held a consultation and then announced that they tad no further interest in the trial. “?he queue began to form at 4.30 a.m and the first iu the line had to contend with pouring rain. flaigh will appear before .G2-year-<s»ld Mr Justice Humphreys tomorrow iicrning, charged with the murder yf Mrs Durand-Deacon, an elderly. Vldow. Haigh arrived from Brixton Prison, London, at I.ewes Gaol on Saturday. Crowds are pouring into Lewes for the trial which brought a carnival atmosphere to tliis sleepy country town.
When the trial begins nearly 1.000.1 000 words a day will pass out of Lewes to newspapers all over the world. To eliminate the noise of messengers going in and out of the court with press reports, special police will form a chain lo pass the copy outside.
