Overseas Scholarship For Whangarei Student
ONE of the most valuable and coveted overseas scholarships available to New Zealand students for post-graduate science studies has been granted to Mr Leo Charles Vining, M.Sc., of Awaroa Stream Road, Whangarei. The scholarship was awarded by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851.
Mr Vining said this morning* that, as English universities were opening in October, he would most likely be leaving New Zealand next month.
Tim successful student has the option of selecting the university at which he wishes to study, according to the type of research he would be undertaking. Mr Vining is not certain as to which ’varsity he will be going to, but has applied for Cambridge. The eldest son of Mr and Mrs C. H. Vining, of Whangarei, ho is 24. He was educated at the Whangarei Primary School and the Whangarei Boys’ High School, where he was dux in 1942. Throughout his secondary school education he excelled in chemistry, and, when he left the high school in 1943, entered the Auckland University College. The following year he joined the Fleet Air Arm. On his return to New Zealand, Mr Vining continued his studies, and graduated B.Sc. in 1947 and M.Sc. with honours last year. Since then he has been engaged on his farm in Awaroa Stream Road. The scholarship is worth £350 a year, and is ordinarily tenable for two years, but may be extended for a third year in exceptional circumstances. Ten scholarships are offered by the commissioners, on the basis of three to Canada, two to Australia, and one each to South Africa, New Zealand, India,'* Pakistan and Eire. Candidates from New Zealand are nominated by the University of New Zealand.
