Two Views On Power Poles
Advice was received by the North Auckland Electric Power Board yesterday from the State Hydro-Electric Department to the effect that the supply of power poles for the new Dargaville sub-station was unpredictable, but that every attempt would be made to build the station by 1953. At the same meeting the board received advice that the supply of power poles from Australia was better, to the extent that a reserve was being built up. This information was received from the Director of. Forestry, who also stated that exporters would be free to ship poles as long as import licences were held. On the motion of the chairman (Mr R. G. Murdoch) it was resolved that the Forestry Director’s letter be sent fo the State Hydro-Electric Department as the two statements were obvious opposites requiring explanation by the department. An inquiry was made by Northland Associated Chambers of Commerce into the board’s attitude to the standardisation of power charges throughout New Zealand. The board resolved that no action could be taken unless the State HydroElectric Department standardised the bulk charges.
Demands on sterling funds in London early this month reduced the Reserve Bank’s sterling exchange reserve by £2,049.605 to £56,913.701. A further acquisition of gold was made, this reserve rising by £39.000 to £3,367,000. The note issue expended' by £19.840 to £50,329,778.
