Burglary Rife In Auckland

AUCKLAND, Fri. (Sp.)—“Some 60 persons have been dealt with by this court this year for breaking and entering,” said Mr Justice Callnn when nine men were brought before him for sentence yesterday. “Burglary is rife in this community,” he added. Five of the nine pleaded guilty to housebreaking or breaking and entering and theft. Thomas Carroll, 42, who smashed the window of a jeweller’s shop, stole two watches, three fountain pens, and pieces of jewellery, was detained for reformative purposes for three years. Robert James Blair, 25, admitted seven charges of breaking and entering and theft, one of attempted breaking and entering, three of breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime and one of unlawful conversion of a motor truck. At his own request Blair was remanded for a fortnight to enable a report on him to be obtained from a mental specialist. Kenneth Edward Fairweather, 20, was sentenced to two years’ Borsal for theft. Colin James Anderson, 24, received two v ears’ . gaol with hard labour for breaking and entering and theft, while Frederick Andrew Porter, on three charges of housebreaking, received two years' reformative detention.
