Kawakawa Pound To Be Abandoned

KAWAKAWA, Thu. (Sp.)—“l think we should adopt the attitude that we cannot spend money on the pound either—we need all our money to put on the roads.”

This suggestion came from the Bay: of Islands County Council chairman (Cr H. T. Atkinson) following receipt of a letter from the Kawakawa Town Board that it was not prepared to spend further money on the pound at Kawakawa. An inquiry was also received from the Commissioner of Crown Lands at Auckland (Mr B. King), whose department owns the pound area, as to the council’s intentions. CONCENTRATE ON KAIKOHE

Councillors agreed that the pound was not providing any revenue and that it seemed impossible to lind a ranger or poundkeeper. j “We’ll just have to concentrate impounding in this county on the Kaikohe pound,” said the chairman. The Kawakawa riding member (Cr G. M. Mclntyre) said the pound was so dilapidated that it would now cost far too much to make it suitable for use. Its disuse would be a loss but could not be helped. It was decided to abandon the pound.
