Publican's Licence For Mt Maunganui?
WELLINGTON, Wed. (P.A.).—“I took over the hotel in 1945 from the" Air Force. Then people came floating out of the blue,” said a witness before the Licensing Control Commission today. / The chairman (Mr A. M. Goulding): They were the airmen, I suppose. (Laughter). The commission was hearing the proprietor of a guest house at Mt. Maunganui, for which a tourist licence was sought, who explained that, in the busy season, there were 10,000 people in the area.
But, he said, the hotel for which the licence was sought catered only for a selective type of person who knew how to use “the nice things of life.” Asked how the 10,000 would get drink, witness said there were several clubs, and liquor agencies were supplying two gallons at a time “which was too much.”
Superintendent D. J. O’Neill, representing -the Police Department, suggested,it might be better if a full publican’s licence were granted Mt. Maunganui.
