Russians Let Lorries Through
BERLIN, Wed., (2.20 p.m.).— Russian guards tonight permitted West German lorries bound for Berlin to clear the Helmstedt zonal border point at a normal rate for the first time since July 9. This sudden decision came just as 60 lorries of an American Army convoy en route to Berlin arrived at Helmstedt.
This convoy left Frankfurt yesterday, and it is believed that it was sent to see what the Soviet frontier guards would do when it reached Helmstedt. BRITAIN CAN COUNTER The Minister of State (Mr Hector McNeil told Parliament today that Britain, if needed, “had retaliatory action within her power" to counter Soviet restrictions on the use of the autobahn to Berlin.
“We shall not be flabby on this subject, but the Foreign Secretary would deprecate any incautious attitude,” ne said.
"The Soviet authorities in Berlin have apparently had instructions to adopt delaying tactics. “The Soviet'action seems to be inconsistent with the New York and Paris agreements, and the Russians, so far, have not produced any satisfactory explanation,” added Mr McNeil.
KING’S BRIZE.—The New Zealander, K. G. S. Feast, scored 99 out of 105 to reach the second stage of the competition for the King’s Prize at Bisley today.
