Laboratory For Guided Missiles
MELBOURNE, Tue. (1 p.m.)— A young Australian officer, LieutenantColonel R. T. Elvish, will help to form the guided missiles laboratory to be built by the Fairey Aviation Company near the rocket range in South Australia.
Lieutenant-Colonel Elvish was formerly assistant-director of armaments at Australian Army Headquarters. In 1946 he was sent to Britain to learn about self-propelled missiles and ranges. Reports received here say that the Fairey Company has completed its arrangements for the laboratory in which scientists will test and improve rockets sent from Britain. Plans for building rockets in Australia will be prepared later. LABOUR SHORTAGES Aviation experts believe that though rockets will be fired on the Woomera range shortly, it will be at least two years before rockets and other projectiles are ready to be tested. Labour shortages are still slowing down work on the range. Leading British aircraf companies are -taking a big part in rocket development on contracts let by the British Ministry of Supply. The Minister of Defence (Mr Dedman). on being asked about the laboratory, said: “I never know which of these proposals is supposed to be secret and subject to the strictest security precautions. “Because of this, I clo not wish to ; malic any comments . _
