Salary Not High Enough

WELLINGTON, Tue. (Sp.)—The appointment of a full-time vice-chancel-lor of the University of New Zealand has been deferred because the Government will not agree to the payment of a salary of £2OOO a year. This decision was riiade at a special meeting of the senate on Friday. The meeting was held in committee and no details were available until yesterday. The following resolution was carried by the senate: "That in view of the fact that the Minister of Stabilisation (Mr Nordmeyer) has declined to authorise a salary of £2OOO a year for the full-time vice-chancellorship of the university, the senate shall; not proceed with the appointment on the present applications, and that the applicants should be informed accordingly.’’ The present vice-chancellor is Professor I. A. Gordon, professor of English at Victoria University College. His term of oliice will expire in January.

The next meeting of the senate will be held in August, when the appointment will again be discussed.
