Good Results From Migration Plan

AUCKLAND, Tue. (Sp.)—Returning from Australia, where he made a study of migrant settlement, the commandant of the displaced persons’ camp at Pahiatua (Major E. J. C. Finny) said that the settlement was being made on a much larger scale than in New Zealand and good results -were being obtained.

Soon after arrival the immigrants went into special camps, where they were taught basic English, Australian customs and were generally introduced to the country.

As the migrants came to Australia on two-year contracts, the men were first sent to work in the cane fields or on similar hard jobs. , The women took domestic positions, usually in hospitals and other essential occupations. Major Finny said the methods were working well, and where they applied to local conditions they would be used in New Zealand.
