1. 1 Delegate To Pitys. Ed. Conference
DUNEDIN, Tue. (P.A.) Mr P. A. Smithells, director of the School of Physical Education at the University of Otago, will leave in about five weeks to attend the Lingiad in Stockholm as representative of the New Zealand Physical Education Society. Mr Smithells will deliver a paper to the Lingiad, which is a gathering of about 15,000 physical educationists from about 40 countries. As there are relatively few speakers during the three weeks’ conference the compliment to Mr Smithells is emphasised. He will also attend as an observer at the world conference at Copenhagen dealing with special problems of physical education for women* A MALE TRIO A man from South Africa and another from South America will make a male trio believed by Mr Smithells to be the only male members so far permitted to attend proceedings. Mr Smithells will also study physical education in London, New York and San Francisco, particularly in relation to development of a course at the Otago School of Physical Education.
The Lingiad, said Mr Smithells today, is a world conference of physical educationists.
It was first held in 1939 and named in honour of Mr Ling, founder of Swedish physical education. The 1949 conference would be the second time the Lingiad had met. Mr Smithells expects to be away eight weeks.
