Supporting Nationalism
NEW YORK, Sun. (1 p.m.)—The United States, pending development of a definite plan to check Communism in Asia, has decided the best expedient is to encourage nationalist movements in the South-East Asian coun-ti-ies immediately vulnerable to Communist expansion, says the New York Herald Tribune’s Washington correspondent. The cori-espondent says the State Department is awai-e that this is a delicate and tricky business, particularly ; colonial areas where the logical consequence of nationalism would seem to be oulidght independance at the expense of Atlantic Pact allies. RUSSIA PLAYS SAME GAME Moi-eover, Russia also is playing the nationalist game, and Communists apparently have captured the nationalist movement in French Indo-China. The correspondent says settlement of the troubles in Indo-China and Indonesia b-.s top priority in any attempt to contain Communism in Asia. The State Department for months has been ui-ging the Netherlands and France to settle their differences with nationalist elei.ients before the latter were completely won over by the Communists.
