Lake Taupo Rises After Heavy Rain
AUCKLAND. Mon. (P.A.).—ln the 48 hours ended at 9 o’clock this morning, 2.04 in of rain fell in the Taupo district and 2.79 in at Tokaanu. The lake level registered 1175.15 ft and is still rising. The heavy rain caused extensive damage to roads, especially the road from Waiotapu to the Waikaremoana turnoff. DAMAGE AT ROTORUA A wind which sometimes reached a speed of 40 m.p.h. during storms in the last five days, has caused some of the biggest seas seen on Lake Rotorua for more than 10 years. Accompanied by driving rain, the wind and waves wrecked a 28ft launch on the rocks, washed a boatshed from the shore, ran aground and badly damaged'a valuable hydroplane, sank several small dinghies and,-in snapping a new half-inch steel cable, cut loose an 18ft runabout which was extensively battered. General storm conditions in the Rotorua district broke trees, electric supply wires, closed the airfield and disrupted telephone communications. (OTHER WEATHER NEWS—PAGE 1)
