SUBSIDY

“This ward is of the opinion that a Government subsidy of £1 for £1 should be granted for all expenditure on county roads other than highways where the general rate is greater than 4d in the £ on the unimproved value.” This remit was carried at a meeting of the No. 1 Ward of the Counties* Association at Whangarei yesterday. The demit will now be submitted to county councils in the ward for their comments. WAIPU CENTENARY Preliminary preparations for the celebration of the centenary of the landing of the Waipu pioneers from Nova Scotia on September 1, 1853, were discussed at last night’s annual meeting of the Waipu Caledonian Society. While some members. thought the society should call a public meeting to investigate the large amount of work involved, others considered that the convening of a meeting could best be left to descendants of the pioneers. This course was agreed to. WAIPU FOOD PARCELS Food parcels to the value of £2O are to be sent to Scotland by the Waipu Caledonian Society, according to a decision made at the annual meeting last night. A similar sum has been voted for the same purpose for the past two years. An additional effort in the form of a house-to-house canvass will be made to raise further funds this year. W. 0., N.C.O. MEETING The monthly meeting of the Whangarei ex-Warrant Officers and N.C.O.s* Club was held in the ATC rooms last evening. After the formal business was concluded, W. 0.2 H. Ross (Area 3 H.Q.) gave a short address on current military trends. Then followed the screening of a film. “The Nazi Strikes,” which showed, very graphically, the events leading up to the late war. Owing to a breakdown in the Army staff projector, some delay was occasioned while efforts were made to obtain another. Mr J. S. T. Tudehopc kindly obliging the club with the loan of his machine. At the conclusion of the. meeting, a vote of thanks was accorded Mr Tudehope for his kindness.

RESIGNS FROM C OF C The Otamatea County Council has resolved to resign from membership of the Dargaville Chamber of Commerce. Cr H. S. McCarroll said the council had been a member “long enough to be a life member.” “Do they support any of our schemes?” Cr O. Mooney queried. It was resolved to pay the current membership fee, to resign, and to advise the reason why. MATAPOURI DEVELOPMENT Eight acres of Maori-owned land on the foreshore at Matapouri are being surveyed with the object of subdividing the block iAto 24 seaside sections. On completion of the survey, application will be made to the Maori Land Court for permission to lease the sections on tenures and at rentals acceptable to the Maori owners and the court.

EXPRESS LATE To enable them to reach Auckland in time to catch the limited express last night, Wellington-bound passengers from the Opua-Auckland express were brought by bus from Kumeu. The northern express was almost two hours late, reaching Auckland at 7.25 instead of 5.31. It was delayed at Otiria Junction waiting for passengers on the train from Kaikohe, which was late. The passengers for the limited express reached Auckland in time to obtain refreshments before the train left.
