Empire Day Explosions
SYDNEY, Wed. (2,30 p.m.)—Empire Day celebrations, which, in Australia, have displaced Guy Fawkes Day in juvenile favour, resulted in an estimated £50,000 worth of fireworks going up in smoke in Sydney suburbs alone. Bonfires blazed in every suburb, and firemen answered over 100 calls to fires which had got out of control.. Fortunately it was a clear, windless night and heavy rains last week-end haH dampened bushes and plantations* Children are blamed for the loss by fire of an unoccupied cottage in the suburb of Earlwood.
Nearby homes were threatened, hut firemen managed to isolate the out-' break, though they worked in an atmosphere of exploding crackers and whizzing rockets. One estimate places casualties requiring medical attention at 43 children and eight adults,
