Fire Guts New Home At Urquhart’s Bay

A newly-completed five-roomed house at Urquhart’s Bay was gutted by fire at 9.30 a.m. today. 'The house had recently been occupied by the owner, Mr A. Hayward, formerly of Maungakaramea, who intended to spend his retirement there. Mr and Mrs Hayward were in Whangarei and the house was empty at the time the fire was discovered by a neighbour, Mrs,, S. Guy. Mrs Guy. called several nearby residents,, but, when they arrived the heat and smoke were so intense that little effort could be made to save the home. Standing on a ridge by the mam road, he dwelling was exposed to a high wind which was blowing at the time and which fanned the flames. r 'y the time a call was made to the Whangarei Fire Brigade the damage hud progressed so far that, the brigade did not leave Whangarei. The cause of the outbreak is obscure. It is understood that the house was insured.
