Immediate Referendum?
WELLINGTON, Wed. (P.A.) - A referendum on- the question of national service will be taken as soon as the Government is given monetary provision by Parliament, and for that purpose a bill will be introduced at the beginning of the forthcoming session, said the Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) this afternoon.
He added that there was no intention of postponing a decision on the question until the next election, but the decision of the people-on national service would be ascertained as soon as possible after Parliament passed the necessary legislation. A Government decision as to the necessity for national service for defence of New Zealand and the Commonwealth would be made at the earl: iest possible moment, Mr Fraser saidHis opinion was that the referendum would be taken immediately the Government was given power to expend money on it.
