Georgic A War Veteran
AUCKLAND, Wed. (P.A.) Aboard the 27,468-ton liner Georgic in Auckland yesterday were only five men who were in her in July. 1941, when two enemy bombs tore through the decks while she was at anchor at Port Tewfik, Suez, and was set on fire from stem to stern.
The Gedrgic, carrying about 400 through passengers, arrived from Sydney yesterday morning to take on fuel oil and water before sailing in the afternoon for Britain, via Panama. One of the five veterans aboard is Chief Engineer J. Rae, M.8.E., who, floundering through the smoke-filled engineroom, helped to coax the faltering engines which carried the ship ashore where she finally sank in shallow water. The fire aboard waxed and waned for 10 days. Five decks disappeared and only twisted beams remained.
None thought she would sail again, but she did, and her condition today is both a tribute to human resource and a reminder of Britain’s wartime shortage of shipping.
