Shortness Of Life Sentences

WELLINGTON, Wed. (Sp.) The shortness of life sentences was criticised by delegates to the annual conference of the Labour Party yesterday. The conference was considering two remits, that the policy regarding the abolition of capital punishment should be reaffirmed, and that a life sentence should be for the term of the prisoner’s natural life.

A spokesman from .the conference said that women delegates were prominent in the discussion. The Ministec of Justice (Mr Mason) had replied that the troubles encountered had nothing to do with the release of life prisoners. The trouble had been due to short sentences imposed by Judges in a humanitarian sense. The conference endorsed the resolution that the policy regarding capital punishment should be reaffirmed, but it rejected the remit about life sentences.
