The men’s teams to represent Whangarei at the Country Week hockey tournament commencing in Auckland on Saturday June 18 were announced by the selector (Mr E. Roughton) at last night’s meeting of the management committee of the Whangarei Hockey Association. Each team contains 14 players, and many versatile men who can fill several'positions in the case of accidents or sickness. The teams are:'
A.—R. : Rough ton, captain, R. Mullins, H. Oldcorn (Old Boys), E. Pearson, E. Johnson, P. Brown, T>. Hannam, L. Martin, R’. Ashcroft (Ramblers), V. Penney (Rovers), C. Bint, vice-captain (Maungakaramea), R. Price, R. Cavaye (Mangaf>ai), M. Johnson (Maungatapere). B:—G. Palmer, captain, 'C. Whittle, D. Garter (Springfield), M. Carter, G. Cavaye, L. VERSATILE PLAYERS Manager for the A team is Mr N. S. Franklin and for the B team Mr L. Bull. Seven of the A team—Bint, Pearson. D. Hannam, Mullins, R. Cavaye, Penney and Oldcorn—were in Whangarei’s XI. last year. Whangarei was unfortunate last year in the Country Week tournament in that it remained unbeaten in the men’s A until the play-off, when it lost the White Horse Cup to Franklin A. Selection of 14 players in each team will guard against the possibility of fielding injured or worn-out men, which happened several times last year. Penney, Bint and Mullins were selected last year to play against Auckland A in the Town v Country match and Pearson, Oldcorn, D. Hannam and D. Carter in the .country team which playcu the AucKland junior reps as a curtain raiser. POWERFUL TEAMS Out of all country teams participating in the Country Week tournament a team called the Auckland provincial reps was chosen to tour Fiji. Five Whangarei players—R. Cavaye. Mullins, Bint, D. Hannam and Penney—were named, but unfortunately Penney was unable to go. The number of versatile players In both teams this year will be an added strength, for the week of solid hockey. Several halves can play as backs, and even in the forward line if necessary. Tire inclusion of Roy Roughton in the front line, the amount of practice the men have had and the earnest desire on the part of all concerned to win the tournament have helped in making these sides two of the strongest In r>n forward from Wliana-rirni
