Commence Second School Term Today
TODAY Whaiigarei children trooped back to school, after a wo-weeks’ holiday, to begin the second term of the year. Increases in the roll numbers at each of the three primary -schools in the borough total 24, but a considerable further increase is expected'within a few weeks.
Several jtaL changes are reported from both the Whangarei Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools. Early applications show that roll umbers will be much the same as last •erm. , , , Roll numbers at the boys school today were: Senior 405, intermediate 169. At the boys school, Mr A Simpson, J.A., has been appointed teacher of English and social studies. Mr Simpson was formerly of the -fgatea District High School, Hauraki J lains, and has taught at the Titoki District High- School. He replaces Mr H. G. Dyer, who left the school in "ebruary. Mr A. R. Ryder, the immediate past leadmaster of the school, is relieving as agricultural master. This position has been vacated by Mr H. R.. Heward, who is taking up a similar position at the Paeroa District High School. Mr Heward intends .to continue to promote his agricultural training scheme at his new school.
The roll is now 455, compared with 451 at the end of the last term.
Congestion will be considerably relieved by two temporary new infant classrooms, erection of which began today.
The rooms, which are in one block, are of the prefabricated standard type, and have an overall length of 64ft and ywidth of 20ft / Both rooms will have heaters, and each will hold between 40 and 50 children.
They will enable the rearrangement of at least two classes. One of these is now held on an open porch on the infant block, exposed to the weather, and the other is accommodated in a washroom.
.However, even with the present roil, a further classroom is needed, and, if the expected increase in numbers occurs, still another room will be necessary within a few weeks. Foundation work has been completed for the two new prefabricated rooms, and the building should be completed within a fortnight.
GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL STAFF At the girls’ school, Miss E. P. Ruston, jf Christchurch, replaces Miss.E. Burrows as clothing and homecraft mistress.
No staff changes have been made, but the roll numbers make the school eligible for an additional assistant master.
Miss Burrows has transferred to the Stratford Technical High School. A new position of physical education instructor will be taken' up by Miss J. E. Allan, formerly of the Titoki District High School, on June 20. Although only four new enrolments had been received at the Whau Valley School this morning, a large number of new. pupils is expected within a few weeks.
Fifteen new children were enrolled at the Whangarei Primary School this morning, eight of them 5-year-olds This makes the roll number 467. WHANGAREI. HORA HORA Miss A. E. Sumner replaced Mrs J. E. Topia as .Standard I, teacher. Until this permanent appointment was made Mrs Topia’s place had been taken temporarily by Mrs E. A. Wills. Mrs Wills was appointed to take Miss M. McLeod’s place, and Mrs I. E. Mjclnnes.. formerly of the Hora Hora School became infant mistress, following the retirement of Miss D. Lupton.
The only staff change at the Hora Hora School was the replacement of the infant mistress, Mrs I. E. Mclnnes. Until her permanent successor replacement, Miss N. C. Burns, of Otakiri, Bay of Plenty, arrives, Mrs. McInnes’ place will be taken by Miss Thompson, of Wellington. Five new admissions were received into the school this morning, making tire school roll 276. All the admissions were in the infant classes.
