Ngota On Maori Land, Parliamentarians
GISBORNE, Fri. (P.A.).—Sir Apirana Ngata yesterday elaborated his statements, at Tolaga Bay on the changing outlook of the younger people of the Maori race. He said that to fr.ee Maori lands from the present complex restrictions, established partly as a _ result of Maori custom affirmed in the Waitangi Treaty,, it would be necessary to evolve an approximation to the European system of land titles. Because of the involved system of land ownership among Maoris, •it would be possible to produce this approximation only by a great extension of the consolidation practice developed over the past .25 years. A drive in thi? direction was likely to come from the younger Maoris. He estimated' that a change in the Parliamentary representation system might be effected .in 10 years. It might take longer to establish Maori land titles on an approximation to the European system.
Sir Apirana said he was interpreting the course of future events, and not expressing his own opinion as to the direction ■ which the younger Maoris’ ambition for equality should be taken.
