Quick Arrest For Alleged Crime
AUCKLAND, Fri. (P.A.)— Before the smoke had cleared after a gelignite explosion in the office safe of the Associated Bottle Company, Ltd.. Khyber Pass Road, two men found hiding among crates of bottles were arrested at the rear of the premises at about $ o’clock on Wednesday evening. ‘ ■ A civilian patrolman noticed that a side window was forced open and telephoned the police. Two constables from Newmarket and a police patrol car from the city arrived promptly and the building was surrounded.
The explosion had jammed the safe door. Yesterday, Mr F. McCarthy, S.M., remanded in custody until May 25 Leslie Ronald Shortcliffe, 27, ■ labourer, and Reuben T. Watai Repia, ' 28, Maori motor driver, on a charge of'breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime. - . . . •
When his coat caught in a door as he was leaving a train at the Nightcaps station, Mr Thomas Doeherty, a miner, of Linton, was dragged beneath the train. A wheel passed over one of his legs, which was amputated below the knee at the Southland Hospital.
