Hollway Has Narrow Escape
MELBOURNE, Fri. (11 a.m.)— The Hollway Government was saved from defeat on a snap motion in the Victorian Legislative Assembly by urgently summoning four of its members to the House.
After frantic telephoning, the At-torney-General (Mr T. D. OJdbam) was discovered at Essendon airport, boarding a plane to Perth, and other members were found at their offices.
The Opposition had sought the adjournment of the House to discuss a letter reported to be missing from a file on the Victorian people’s-car project, which had been tabled in the Parliamentary library. The Government’s position would Rave been perilous had it not been for the absence of three Country Party members, including Messrs H. J. Hyland and M. Bennett, who have absented themselves on several occasions when vital votes were taken, and who have been called “unofficial Government supporters.” The Government averted defeat by 28 votes to 25. Mr Hollway then produced the missing document and claimed that the Opposition had confused the files.
