Land Schemes 'Waste Of Time'

KAITAIA, Fri. (Sp.)—When Gov-, ernment departments themselves could not make progress, the various other land utilisation schemes were a sheer waste of time.

Cr J. W. Dawson, who is also president of the Mangonui County RSA, made this comment at the monthly meeting of the Mangonui County Council on Wednesday. He was speaking to proposals of the Northland Aid-for-Britain Committee to secure comprehensive information on idle lands and development prospects. The committee plans to meet Far North local body and other intei'ests at Kaitaia next Monday.

“Neither the Rehabilitation Department, the Lands and Survey Department nor Mr Skinner himself can make progress towards further land development,” said Cr Dawson. “They can’t settle 6000 returned servicemen.”

Before progress could be made, the administration of the Dominion would require to decide whether future expansion was to follow agricultural or industrial trends, Cr Dawson concluded.
