Nash Replies To 'Phone' Allegations

WELLINGTON, Fri- (Sp.)--The itemised figures which Mrs Ross quoted were not the cost of telephone calls but actually covered all the sums paid by other departments to the Post and Telegraph Department for all services.

The Minister of Finance (Mr Nash) said this last night in reply to a complaint made by Mrs G. H. Ross, M.P. for, Hamilton, that Government departments had incurred excessive telephone toll accounts, totalling £395,094 in 12 months. Mrs Ross’ figures had not only included toll bills, but such varying and substantial items as postage, telegrams, cablegrams, rent of post office boxes, telephone installations, extensions, rentals and maintenance and other charges. In some cases Mrs Ross had quoted the amount voted for all these charges during the year 1947-48, and.in other instances had given the amount spent, Mr Nash added.
