Profit Control Price Tribunal's Objective
AUCKLAND, Thu. (P.A.).—"ln no country in the world outside the Iron Curtain is there a Government department with such far-reaching and dictatorial powers,” declared Mr A. G. Wilson, president of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, at a council meeting today. He denounced the Price Tribunal as "an agency of political expediency, without regard to principle and British justice.” Mr Wilson said it was clear that the question of selling prices was no longer the main objective, but profit control.
The time had come to face up tq this question. “The commercial community is surely entitled to some explanation of details of the policy, principles and ultimate aims of the tribunal," he declared.
The Price Tribunal, Mr Wilson argued, was largely responsible for many shortages of essential materials, including building materials. Reduction of controls would give consumers a fairer deal than price control could ever devise.
Mr Wilson’s report was adopted unanimously.
