Doctor Attacks Old Tradition
AUCKLAND, Thu. (P.A.)— Dr A. W. S. Thompson, district medical officer of health, attacked an old tradition yesterday. He said children should not be smacked in the “usual place.” In some cases it could do a. good deal of psychological damage,” he told members of the Auckland Junior Chamber of Commerce.
As alternatives he suggested the hand, forearm or calf of the leg. “If the infliction of pain is necessary—and a smack at the right moment is an excellent thing in many cases—it should be administered without emotion or not at all,” he added.
