Sit - Down Strike
The ‘humorous gem’ of the Northland sheep dog trial season was provided by a dog at Maungakaramea yesterday afternoon. He had headed his sheep and pulled them down the hill in excellent style and, with his master, had driven them quietly along to the hurdles. After being in the yard at the top of the hill since early morning, the sheep were hungry and nibbled at the grass & few feet from the hurdles. Suddenly, the dog turned tail and ran across to the judge’s car. He jumped onto the back seat, peered through the windscreen at the nibbling sheep, apparently found the view not to his liking, and immediately hopped over into the front seat where he sat watching his dumbfounded master and his three charges. All orders to ’return to work’ were in vain.
The dog sat there till assured that his owner did not intend completing the event.
“He’s gone to check his points,” cried one enthusiast, standing near the refreshment tent. “Perhaps he wants to see if its worth while carrying on,” added another.
The dog’s antics, and the subsequent remarks undoubtedly caused the laugh of the day.
