Need For More Clergy

WELLINGTON, Wed. (P.A.) The general synod of the Church of England yesterday discussed the report of the commission set up to consider the best means of selecting candidates for the ministry.

In practice, the report stated, the selection of candidates was left almost entirely in the hands of the bishops. Notwithstanding their independence, some kind of uniform practice was considered desirable.

The commission thought it should not be open to an applicant, who was refused ordination in one diocese, to approach the.bishop of another.

On a division, a motion by Archdeacon Houghton, of Auckland, that the commission’s report be adopted was lost, the bishops voting against it, although clerical and lay voters approved.

It was time the “dead wood'* in the present hymnal was cleared away. A revision was long overdue, said a report presented by Dean Warren, of Christchurch.
