Mamet at Coffer Dam Built la Day
MARAETAI, Tue. (Sp.).—After an which 20,000 cubic yards of rock was shaped into a coffer dam. the rock was shaped into a coffer dam, the Waikato River was successfully diverted through the tunnel prepared for it at the site of the Maraetai hydroelectric power project. Because of heavy rains at Taupo, the diversion had not originally been contemplated for the week-end, but with the improvement in the weather on Friday, heaps of materials were built up on the banks for bulldozing into the river to form a coffer dam.
At 8 a.m. on Saturday the gap was 60ft wide, and at midday, after the control gates at Taupo had been closed to restrict the flow, the gap had been reduced to 30ft.
As the day wore on, efforts were intensified, and at 6 p.m. the river was completely dammed,
The river level was raised 7ft and the water was forced through the narrow tunnel. As soon as the downstream coffer had been built to its full height, construction of the coffer dam upstream, which would enclose the space in which the main concrete dam is to be built, will proceed.
