Protest Against House Allocation
Protesting against the removal of state houses for Government departments from the common pool before the 50 per cent allocation was made to ex-service-men, the annual general meeting of the Whangarei Ex-Service Association resolved to press for the full number guaranteed by the act.
Mr J. Richards asked if the number of state houses allocated to ex-servicemen last year (24) represented 50 per cent of all houses built. "That number represents 40 per cent only, as the Mines Department took several and the Railways Department the rest, before the division was made,” said Mr G. A. Bethell.
The Native Department had a claim on next year’s allocation. He was satisfied that returned men were receiving half the allocation made through the normal channels, but Government depart-: ments, by taking their requirements first, reduced the quota considerably.
