Tomorrow Last Day Of Community Tree Planting
MORE volunteer workers will be wanted tomorrow to assist in completing the planting of 22,000 eucalyptus trees on the Parahaki slopes which were swept by fire three years ago. During the past two week-ends, contingents of Whangarei Boy Scouts have planted 12,500 trees, and this week-end, which will be the last occasion on which volunteer helpers will be required, it is hoped that several thousand .more trees will be olanted.
Borough parks staff will be engaged in the completion of the project, which in three years, wili result in a marked improvement to the appearance of the scorched slopes. By that time the trees will have grown to an average height of about 6ft. They will be fully mature in 20 to 25 years under favourable conditions. Flanted at the rate of about 10.00 per acre, the trees are spaced at 6ft intervals in rows Bft apart. The work is being carried out under the direction of the Whangarei Borough Council’s parks superintendent (Mr F. S. Holman), who explained yesterday that the advantage of late autumn planting is that the trees have an opportunity of becoming properly established before the dry summer weather commences. < Mr Holman said the first trees planted a fortnight ago were looking very well, the recent showery weather giving them a good start. He hoped that a good number of volunteers would be available in addition to the Boy Scouts on Saturday, Mr Holman said. Transport would be provided from the borough yards in Walton Street at 8 a.m. tomorrow. ' GRATEFUL TO SCOUTS.
“The scouts have done excellent work, and we are most grateful to them,” said the chairman of tjie Borough Council Parks Committee (Cr C. J. Homer) today.. “It was essential to plant the trees at this time, and other labour was not obtainable. - • “For the final day tomorrow a ready welcome and a spade will be available to anyone who is able to assist the boys in doing their community good turn,” he added.
