PLUS-2 JEFFERY HAS 84 IN IST ROUND

Northland Golf Championship Starts .. .

J. T. JEFFERY, the plus-two golfer from New Plymouth, provided the sensation of the first qualifying round in the Northland amateur golf championship at Mt Denby this morning.

He had a round of 84. "' “ The best performance among the first half of the field to come in was a gross 72 by N. Edwards, of Titirangi. E. W. Young (Titirangi), a finalist last year, had 75, and the Whangarei player, H. S. Budd,‘ had a 76. * Scoring generally was poor, despite the fact that weather conditions were perfect and the course was in good order.

Jeffery right off form in his short game, failed to find the green with his seconds and' was all at sea with his putter. He three-putted on five greeus. He went out in 41, including a birdie at the Bth and five bogeys.

The inward nine took him 43, with bogeys at the 15th and 18th being the only semblance of his true form. Edwards played very steady golf on the fairways and putted brilliantly. He was two under bogey for the outward nine, with birdies at the third and sixth, and bogeys at the other seven holes.

He lost his first stroke to bogey at; the 14th and another one at the 16th; tut retrieved one with a birdie at the 17th, and was one over with a 36 for the homeward nine. Young, who was reduced to plus 1 in a pennant match in Auckland last week-end, equalled bogey on the outward nine with birdies at the 6th and Bth and concessions at the Ist. and 9th. Coming home he lost a strike at the 12th and at the 14th. The ex-Masterton player, Budd was cut in 39, with birdies at the 4th and Bth and one-overs at the first 6th and 7th He had birdies at the last two holes of the round, but conceded strokes to bogey at the 10th. 13th, 14th and 15th. One of toe most eventful rounds was experienced by S. B. Williams (Waite- , mata).

He lost three new balls. At the 14th his tee shot stuck in a tree and although Wynyard, one of his three, climbed to the top, no trace of the errant ball could be found. D. R Abemethy (Titirangi) lost two balls at the 6th hole and had an outward round of 50. H Hedley lost two strokes when nis ball after being played from a bunker struck a caddy who was holding the pin.
