SECRET PREVIEW OF ATOM AGE’ WARFARE

LONDON, Mon. (1,30 p.m.).—Top-secret indoor naval exercises giving a preview of “atom age” warfare opened at Greenwich Naval College, London, today, before the most important peacetime gathering of British Commonwealth and American service chiefs ever assembled in Britain. The exercises, known as “Operation Trident,” and due to last five days, are being held behind heavily-guarded doors surrounded by more security measures than prevailed on many wartime occasions.

Only the barest outline has been divulged publicly of what some 400 or more high-ranking officers, scientists and "back room boys" will hear and see in a series of lectures and demonstrations dealing with the future defence of the British Commonwealth and its ability to wage war. All weapons, tactics, strategies and ideas which could be applied in defence on Commonwealth supply routes arid future sea warfare, will be reviewed. British naval officers from all overseas stations are joining military and air force representatives in a study of the exercises which will all be open to the delegation of high-ranking United States officers and technical experts who have come to London specially for the occasion. ’Apart from talks by specialists, the exercise is being conducted by means of films and stage settings, as well as models representing sea baffles. Other parts of the exercises are considered so secret, that, every person entering the demonstration hall must show a pass and be checked by security officers.
