40-Hr Week Premature?

HOBART, Mon. (11.30 a.m.).—“Results of the 40-hour week suggested that its introduction generally in Australia may have been premature,” said the Labour Premier of Tasmania (Mr R. Cosgrove). “It makes one wonder, when subsequent results are summed up, whether we were not too hasty,” he said. “The shorter week was to have been regarded as a prize for diligence and devotion to work, the advent of which would enable workers to enjoy more leisure in healthy pursuits and cultural vocations.

“Now, even amid the present uncompromising international race for world markets and world domination, some Australian unions have announced openly their policy of compaigning for an even shorter working period. On the contrary, every effort should be made to retain the 40-hour week before it is too late.”
